Making A Basic Texture

This tutorial is going to help you make a basic texture. You can use pretty much anything to make one – pictures, default tools and most of all, imagination.

Step One

  • First of all, you need to choose a picture you want to use. The more colourful the better. When you have chosen your image, open it up in PSP. This is the image I am using. Open a new image, and set the size to 800x600 (although you can have it larger if you wish). Resize your picture and copy and paste it into your new image.

    Step Two

  • Now you need to make your image blurred. Go effects->blur->gaussian blur. When the optionx box appears, change the radius to 50.00. Now go layers->merge->merge all. You should be left with something like this.

    Step Three

  • Now there are two things you can do at this stage, you can either find yourself another image (with different colours to your first image if possible) and repeat the above step, then paste your new image on top of the old one, and either use the overlay or soft light option, to add more colour. Or you can do what I’m doing and that is to choose a colour and floodfill over the current image. First go layers->new raster layer and then choose a colour that hasn’t been used in the picture. I am using - #F25A90. Floodfill over your image and then go layers->properties and change the blend mode to soft light. This still doesn’t look quite right, so again I am going to go layers->new raster layer and my next colour I’m going to choose is - #EC9F0A. I’m also going to set the blend mode to soft light. Now you can keep adding as many colour layers as you like but I'm staying with just two so now I've finished, layers->merge->merge all->. Now we have the basic colours.

    Step Four

  • The next stage is really just pot luck and trying out different brushes to see what give the best textures. First off create a new layer, layers->new raster layer. Then find yourself a brush. Texture brushes, ink drops, splotches, grunges work the best. This is the brush I am using to begin with. The two colours best to use are white and black for your brush. I am going to start with black. Cover your image with your chosen brush, don’t worry about making it neat and uniformed, the untidier the better. This is what mine looks like now. Now go layers->properties and change the blend mode to soft light. Using the same layer I am going to use the same brush as before but this time it will be white and go over the black brush. Try to keep it random, and not exactly where the black brushes are. When you have finished, go layers->properties and then change the opacity to 68 and then layers->merge->merge all. You should now have something that looks like this.

    Step Five

  • Now you can keep adding as many more brushes as you want, but I’m going to add one more, this one. Create a new layer layers->new raster layer and start applying the brush, again with black. When you have covered it as much or as little as you want, go layers->properties and change the blend mode to soft light and set the opacity to 43. This is what it should look like now. Now on the same layer, use the same brush but this time with white and when you have finished you should have something that looks like this. Then go layers->merge->merge all.

    Step Six

  • Now you have your basic texture but if you want to give it a little something else go layers->duplicate and then go effects->texture effects->blinds. You can use whatever settings you like but I’m using these. Finally layers->merge->merge all and now you are finished.

Your texture should look something like this. There are literally hundreds of different combinations you could have to create different colours and effects, be creative and experiment!
